An Inauspicious Beginning

Wellllllll here we are. Just you, me, and a brand new blog. Isn’t this cozy? Aren’t we close? I’ve been keeping dibs on what I wanted to write about since, oh, about 2 months ago, so I think the water’s finally warm enough for a dip.

Speaking of tardiness (I don’t feel tardy…), I thought this would be a fine time to share with you a few images of my Christmas décor. One of the many ways I’ll scar my future children is by being perpetually late with seasonal activities. (In addition to showing their naked baby photos to their friends, feeding them popcorn for dinner, and forcing them to tapdance for my buddies. I already know they’ll be going to therapy when they’re older, and I want to give them something interesting to talk about. I’m a giver.)

Yeah. Seasonality. Okay. I always start Christmas crafts on time, honest! But then there are things to do, and people to see, and I can never seem to finish everything until after the season is over. Like my new treetopper (which I forgot to photograph before I packed it up, but it’s adorable, thanks for asking. Hand twisted pipecleaner snowflake with a big vintage button on the front). I wrapped that baby up on the 2nd of January. Oops. But on the other hand, when I unpack everything for next Christmas, I will have forgotten that I worked on it for like four hours (!), and I’ll be so surprised and delighted! I am practicing for when I really do have Alzheimer’s; I want to be graciously surprised and delighted in my dementia.

To use D’s favorite analogy, I am now so belated with my seasonal celebrations that I’ve wrapped around to the other side.

This year I put my cute fabric ornaments in my new(-ish) felt bowl that I had bought last year at Dickens House, totally forgot about, then discovered again, complete with quavery-but-gracious old-lady exclamations of surprise. (oh my stars and garters! goodness gracious!) (I also bought a holiday tea towel there, and forgot about it until mid January. But I put it out anyways, cuz that’s how I roll.) Anyway, I really like the old handmade ornaments—wouldn’t it be great to make a tiny version of that embroidered dove for holiday earrings? J, you’re the fabric one—make me some! That was my mom or my grandma, not sure who, kicking ass with the embroidery back in the day. Bet they had it done before christmas, too.

I also used my icicle and snowflake ornaments, which turned out very pretty on the mantel. The big star is actually a tree topper and just out of range it has a enormous ugly spiral thing for attaching to the branch. But it's not in the photo, so that doesn't count. Gosh cropping is awesome.

The SBC doesn't really understand the holidays, but is rock solid on the idea of treats. She knows that every moment spent on holiday decoration is a moment that should be spent giving her treats or kitty crack (aka cat toothpaste), so she’s taking to knocking over things as a subtle, loving hint for *treats, bitch*. Here she is, surrounded by askew decorations, trying to look simultaneously cute and hungry.

And Mr. Roboto needed a photo because he is my favorite Christmas ornament. A very worthy gift from the XO. Mr. Robot gets his own special storage box. Oh and speaking of which...the best christmas project? Getting rid of one huge box of Christmas things! That's one less thing to drag down from the top closet shelf while Small Brown is doing her "I want treats" interpretive dance around my ankles.

Domo! Domo!
